All about cat eye glasses!

Named after their resemblance to the shape of a cat’s eye, cat eye glasses have been really popular during the 1950s and 60s, almost synonymously combined with that beehive or bob hairstyle very popular in those years. The shape is characterised by rounded frames that flare out near the temples giving them that unique feminine look, elegant and sophisticated.

Many famous women helped making cat eye shape famous, to name a few: Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Windsor, Dinah Manoff, Elizabeth Taylor,  Lisa Loeb, Amy Lame, Mary Whitehouse, Erika Auger and Barry Humphries.

Audrey Hepburn wears a pair of cat eye in the famous film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, after the movie popularity the term “Manhattan” became the new trendy name for this style, being made by the infamous Oliver Goldsmith at the time.

Although this style popularity has fallen since the 60s, (bug-Eye glasses replaced the cat eye shape and became very popular in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s), some of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood including Jessica Alba, Dita Von Teese, Olivia Palermo, Nicole Richie and Zoe Saldana have brought the style back.

Some people like them and some people don’t, cat eye glasses remain nevertheless a timeless fashion icon and statement.
