HSH Dispensing Optician reveals her secret to find the right frame!

secrets with glasses

Rachel is our Dispensing Optician and Practice Manager at HS+H Birstall practice, we have asked her to reveal to us some of her secrets when it comes to advising a patient about choosing the best frame, here is what she said:

‘When people ask for a quick guide to choosing the perfect glasses, they need to understand that there’s often nothing quick about picking specs. If you ask each Dispenser they’ll have a different approach. As a dispenser we’re considering the prescription, fit of the frame and cosmetic appearance. A patient tends to be just looking at whether they look good or not.

I tend to put specs styles into 4 different categories:

-Plastic frames: Bolder, they make more of a statement, at the moment they’re very fashionable. They also fit the bridge of the nose so can be more comfortable.

-Metal frames: More discreet, lighter in weight, they come with nose pads that we can adjust for comfort and for where the glasses fit. Titanium is usually the lighter metal.

-Supra frames: More discreet, lighter weight, nose pieces to allow adjustments. Still make a statement but without a full frame all the way round.

-Rimless frame: Very discreet, very light weight, they can look ‘invisible’.

When looking for the right frame, face shape does play a part, e.g. with rounder faces you’d try a more squarer shape, although one should not be scared to try all sort of shapes, you may be surprised to discover that an unusual shape looks good on you!

Age does not necessarily play a role, often when patients are older they’ve had the same shape glasses for a long time. They either want to stick with it, or they want something different so we try to encourage them to be braver and try something they may not have looked at before.

Personal style is important to consider, spectacles do help building and reinforcing it: If someone in bright clashing colours comes in you’d go straight to the brighter frames/bolder shapes! Although If they’ve come straight from work they’ll more likely be wearing something different at the weekend, so a good idea would be to have two pair of specs, a smarter one for work and a fun funky pair for the weekend. Beards are very popular for men at the moment, so they’re likely to be following more of the fashion trends and therefore you’d go for the rounder shape specs that are very popular at the moment!

We have many unique pieces at the shop that can give a very distinctive touch to one’s own personal style. When people want something unique they tend to ask straight away for it.
Glasses are seen more and more as a fashion accessory rather than a necessity.
Of course not everyone is into fashion, but as long as a patient feels confident and happy in their specs I’m happy’.
